Goodbye Allan and a big Welcome to Carl!
The heart, the soul and the voice of the Hollies, Allan Clarke, has retired. Thank God the rest of the band decided not to retire as well.
Not only has Carl Wayne (formerly of the Move and for seven years in the London production of Blood Brothers) joined the lads, but they have decided to move on and evolve. They are coming to the end of the present tour and will be going into the recording studio to lay down some new material.
I for one cannot wait to hear the new Hollies sound, although there were some clues in the live performance. What a brilliant choice it was to replace Allan with Carl Wayne last February.
His selection adds another dimension to the stage show (they played a marvellous 'Flowers in the Rain' and 'Blackberry Way') Their show is now so professional, embellished as it is with superb lighting and introductory backing tapes, I can only see the Hollies 'moving' forward into a new era.
Can it really be all of 35 years since they appeared at the ABC Trocadero in Leicester? Tony Hicks hasn't changed at all!
Only two-thirds of the seats were filled on the night. Boy, the absent 400 really missed a wondrous performance.
